That irritating whine you hear when you fire up a CD on your music system isn’t a problem with your CD drive, it’s Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. The heavy metal rocker has been complaining for years about music piracy, specifically off Limewire and other file sharing services. Along with Ulrich are a number of other rock and pop stars that are telling heart-wrenching tales of being faced with the possibility of living in their chauffeur-driven limos and reduced to trashing Motel 6 rooms instead of Hyatt suites. Not that Gibbleguts is advocating theft of intellectual property, but if one considers the outrageous cost for a single CD that is 90% crap and usually only has one decent song on it, it’s no surprise that everyone is downloading music off the net.
Don’t expect to see a rock star telethon any day soon. CD sales were up 11% last year, to a total of $12.8 billion.
